Campofrío, in collaboration with Horizon, is building a fractionation unit for the porcine intestinal mucosa at its facilities in Burgos, Spain. It will be used to obtain heparin, which is on the World Health Organisation List of Essential Medicines. The company is investing €3 million in this project.
Horizon is a biotechnology company that works to valorise the intestinal mucosa of pigs as no one has before to make natural, innovative products that improve human, animal and plant health. Its partners have over 30 years of experience in the international business of animal by-products.
This initiative charts a new course for Campofrío, diversifying its business by moving into the high value-added sector of biomedicine and health and consolidating the transition towards a circular economy model.
