Grupo Fuertes and Horizon have set up the company Hepabiotic, which will work to valorise organs and tissues from pigs to produce heparin.

Heparin is the most commonly used medication to treat and prevent thrombosis, particularly in oncology and post-surgical patients. It is also the standard therapy for people with cardiovascular conditions.

Roughly 6 billion doses of heparin are used each year and some 150 million lives are saved thanks to this drug, which is on the World Health Organisation List of Essential Medicines.

The industrial unit will be located at the facilities of El Pozo Alimentación, the main company in Grupo Fuertes, in Alhama de Murcia, Spain.

Horizon is a biotechnology company that works to valorise the porcina intestinal mucosa as no one has before to make natural, innovative products that improve human, animal and plant health. Its partners have over 30 years of experience in the international business of animal by-products.

With this project, Grupo Fuertes is expanding its value chain through a circular economy system based on taking advantage of and valorising an animal by-product.

Plus, both companies will invest heavily in R&D to develop promising new compounds with high biological value.
